Preteen
campers have fun under the big top By John Warren BIG SANDY, Texas--The
building of a local Church of God congregation turned into a three-ring
circus June 17-20 when a day camp for preteenagers sponsored "Fun
Under the Big Top." This year's camp
at the Church of God Big Sandy registered 53 participants, with
the age-groups divided up as lions, tigers and bears. Sharon Wilson
of Tyler, Texas, served as ringmaster. Assisting Mrs. Wilson as
organizers were Carol Bald of Gladewater, Reesa Bearse of Hawkins
and Angela Dunnam of Pritchett. Amos Worden of Big Sandy entertained
campers and staffers as Mr. Giggles the Clown, assisted by Aubrey
Flynn of Hawkins as Tater Toes. "Carol, Reesa,
Angela and Sharon set a wonderful example of teamwork in preparing
for the camp and overseeing the many details," said church
pastor Dave Havir of Big Sandy. Enthusiastic preteens
participated in activities that included woodworking, cooking, arts
and crafts, music, basketball, kickball, archery and Christian-living
classes. A cookout and
swim party for campers and staff members took place June 23 at the
home of Charles and Cindy McLendon, near Hawkins. More than 40 volunteers served as counselors, instructors, assistants and support staffers to provide the manpower to make this annual activity a success. |
