Camp in Texas hill country expands to include families

AUSTIN, Texas-The organizer of a summer camp that is scheduled to take place in the hill country north of Austin in August has announced an extension of the deadline to register and that whole families, rather than just children and teenagers, may attend.

Camp Champions at Lake LBJ, an hour's drive northwest of here, will operate Aug. 3-7. The registration deadline has been extended to July 15, according to Dan Girouard.

The camp is open to children, teenagers and families of all Church of God fellowships. It will run for four nights and three days from 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, until after breakfast Thursday, Aug. 7.

"We will send a letter out in July to those who have registered that will recommend clothing and gear to bring, as well as give other helpful information," said Mr. Girouard.

The original age-group eligible for Camp Champions was 8-16, but now family members older and younger may camp along with those who had already planned to attend.

"Children under the age of 8 are welcome as long as they are accompanied by at least one of their parents," said Mr. Girouard. "We plan on tailoring some special activities for the younger children. Many of these activities will be the same as what the older groups are doing but geared down and staffed with parents to ensure an enjoyable and safe time."

Family members over the age of 18 are welcome as well. The older family members can choose to take part in activities with the older teens, or they can involve themselves in adult fellowship, camp service and games that will be less physically demanding. The agenda for campers ages 8-16 is unchanged, Mr. Girouard said.

"Please rest assured we believe the camp will only be better by providing opportunities for families of like circumstances that have children of similar ages, to build and strengthen friendships as the youth do the same."

Plenty of housing is available, including two adult men's dormitories and two adult women's dorms.

"We will also make every effort to allow parents to care for the needs of the younger children at night," Mr. Girouard said. "Children under 8 will be able to sleep in special dorms with their parents or perhaps in a dorm next door if that is acceptable.

"The housing arrangements for youth from age 8 to 18 will be unchanged. They will sleep in dorms with other children of their age and sex."

Fees for adults and youth are the same at $100 per participant. In the case of three or more members of the same family, only the first two will pay full tuition. Each additional family member will pay $50.
