East Texas man injured in freak accident with tree

BIG SANDY, Texas-A former Ambassador employee and member of the Church of God, John Warren, 43, was critically injured when a falling tree bounced and fell on him May 21. He and his wife, Darlene, who work together in their family-owned tree-service company, were felling a tree at a site north of Longview when the accident occurred.

Mr. Warren, who was pinned beneath the tree, was transported to a Longview hospital after emergency personnel freed him.

He underwent seven hours of surgery the evening after the accident for injuries that included broken bones and spinal damage. He was upgraded from critical to guarded-but-stable condition the next day.

Mr. Warren attended Ambassador in 1973 and began working full time for the college the next year. He was employed at AU until two years ago, when he began his own business.

An award-winning horticulturist and volunteer track coach, Mr. Warren has lived in the area for more than 20 years, coming here from Buckfield, Maine. He is serving his third term as a member of the board of Big Sandy Independent School District.

He is a member of the board of the United Church of God, Big Sandy, and a deacon.

Mr. Warren's surgeons have told his family that he may never walk again. An elder and close friend of Mr. Warren's who anointed him in the hospital emergency room said that at that time a surgeon informed the family how serious the injuries were.

"The surgeon said, when they went over the X rays with the family, for them not to get their hopes up, that these are serious injuries and John may never walk again," said Ellis Stewart, an elder of the United Church of God. "The family requests your prayers for John for his healing and to help them through this trial they're going through."

The Warrens have two children, John Warren Jr. and Rebekah Allen.

Mr. Warren's address is Rt. 3, Box 523, Big Sandy, Texas 75755. Friends have established a fund for the Warrens at a bank. Its address is John Warren Special Fund, Austin Bank, P.O. Box 748, Big Sandy, Texas 75755.
